How Much Is A Good Full Suspension Bike
It all depends on the type of trails you plan on riding, although almost all of the best budget full-suspension bikes focus on trail riding. Pricing starts at around $1,500/£1,500 for a bike that is going to give decent performance on the trail. That said it can vary between different brands and the price points they choose.
The amount of extra kit and performance you get on the next bike up in the range – and the price gap – can alter significantly. In some cases, brand managers will sacrifice some profit to create a really killer value entry-level bike. In other cases, itâs you whoâll be making those sacrifices. Itâs certainly always worth checking what saving a bit longer or digging deeper into your budget will get you and where relevant weâve flagged up whether the ânext bike upâ is the better deal here. If you can stretch your budget, check out our pick of the best mountain bikes under $2500.

What Components Should I Look For
The real surprise with this list is how good the rest of the spec on several of these bikes is, with comparable brake and gear setups to hardtail bikes. The days of super long stems and narrow bars ruining the ride are thankfully behind us too and even saddles and grips are generally sorted. The thing you probably wonât get and will have to upgrade to is a dropper seat post but make sure that the frame you choose is at least ready for an internally routed setup.
Whether you get a hardtail or a suspension bike, swapping tires is a great way to make real performance gains at a reasonable price. So if youâre buying from a shop and have a bit of cash left in your budget then ask if they can swap them before you get the original ones dirty.

Learn About 29 Inch Mountain Bikes With Jensonusa
Mountain bikes with 29 wheels have become increasingly popular over recent years but are no new invention and were first introduced back in 1999 on race bikes. Today, 29 tires are found on bikes across all of the mountain riding disciplines and are still renowned for their rolling efficiency, speed, and control. 29-Inch mountain bikes have more roll-over capability and traction than 27.5-inch mountain bikes, yet sacrifice agility and turning radius.
How Tall Should You Be For A 29
Thanks to different frame sizes of an individual bike, adult riders of all heights can ride a 29 mountain bike. Although the larger tire sizes may look disproportionate to a smaller body size, with a smaller frame size, a shorter rider can reap the same benefits of 29 tires as a taller rider. Most taller adult riders tend to ride 29 bikes due to being more relative to their size, however, mountain bike tire sizes are not height-specific and are more of a personal preference.

Geometry And Head Tube Angles
Bike geometry is said to be steep or slack. Steep geometry places the seat above the pedals and places the front wheel under the handlebars, giving power and control while climbing. Slack geometry angles the seat back behind the pedals and places the front wheel farther ahead of the handlebar for control on steep descents and big drops.
The head tube angle is a good general indicator of the type of riding a bike was designed to do.
A quick guide to head angles:
68° or aboveis a pure cross country bike.
66° 68°is for all-purpose trail bikes.
65° 66°is for enduro style bikes used on steep trails and big drops.
65° and belowis for pure gravity riding: very steep trails, jumps, and big drops.

Cable And Hose Routing
Derailleurs, brakes, and dropper seatposts are all connected to their controls by cables or hydraulic hoses. These hoses can snag on obstacles or come loose and get in your way. Some riders prefer to secure them with cable ties, leaving them accessible for easy maintenance. Some frames allow internal routing, running the cables and hoses inside the frame tubes. This gives a cleaner appearance and protects cables and hoses from damage, but can make maintenance more complicated.
What Is The Advantage Of A 29
Mountain bikes with 29 tires are popular among all riding disciplines and are favored by riders who prefer rolling efficiency, speed, and control over agility and playfulness. 29ers have amazing roll-over capability and are able to eat up bigger rocks on the trail than a smaller 27.5 tire, which means you can carry more of your speed over obstacles. Another advantage of having larger tires is that more of the tire is contacting the dirt at any given tire compared to a smaller diameter tire, which means more traction and control.

First Things First: What Is A Full
Full suspension mountain bikes are bicycles with both front and rear suspension, as opposed to only front suspension like that found on hardtail mountain bikes. The key advantage is a smoother ride and softer landing when coming off of big drops or landing jumps in bike parks.
Depending on what kind of cycling you intend to do, full-suspension bikes may have several advantages or disadvantages. Full suspension bikes are usually a bit more expensive and heavier due to the added mechanics on the rear, which can make them less ideal for fast or uphill riding.
However, when it comes to downhill riding, full-suspension bikes are often a necessity. With steep, tricky descents it is far easier and more comfortable, not to mention safer, to ride a full-suspension bike.

Types Of Mountain Bikes
These are short-travel bikes made for racing on XC and marathon courses where you need sharp handling and efficient suspension. Many have head-tube angles near 70 degrees, 29-inch wheels and, if they have rear suspension, 90 to 120mm of travel.
These are the most popular bikes for good reason, designed to handle almost everything from casual XC trails to rowdy downhills. Expect to see head angles between 65 and 68 degrees, slightly longer wheel bases, and travel between 120 and 150mm.
These are mini-downhill models that are good at climbing. They excel on steep descents, bike parks, and anytime youre going fast. Head angles range from 62 to 66 degrees and reaches are longer to keep your weight farther behind the front wheel.
Made for downhill races and bike parks, these have ultra-long wheel bases, lots of travel , and dual-crown forks that slow handling but help the bike rip downhill in a straight line and hit massive jumps better than anything else.

HEAD TUBE: 66° SEAT TUBE: 66.3° CHAINSTAY: 435mm
Cannondale never fails to impress with groundbreaking new designs and the Habit 4 Womens bike is no exception. At first look, the aluminum frame seems almost bizarre with its sharply indented downtube but one ride, and everything starts to make sense.
A trail bike with its priorities straight: progressive design, playful agility, and killer capability all in the name of fun.
This Trail-focused bike tears through singletrack and over rocky trails with reckless abandon, making short work of small and large obstacles alike. Its certainly better suited to fast trail riding than mountainous descents but although it wobbles a bit, it can take on the downhills with a degree of success.
Habit 4 Womens Specific trail bike is also equipped with a reversible chip that allows riders to tweak the geometry by raising the bottom bracket .

What About Suspension
At the lower end of the price range, youâre almost certainly going to take a hit on suspension quality. That means 32mm steel legs rather than 35mm alloy legs on forks and simple rear shocks with limited adjustment and potentially less than perfect damping. You can expect to get equipment from Manitou, Suntour, X-Fusion or own branded gear rather than RockShox or Marzocchi dampers although you can get them or even Fox in this list. That doesnât mean that cheaper forks and shocks etc. canât work well, but read our reviews to guide you in the right direction and potentially be more prepared to do more servicing and general TLC.

Does Geometry Matter
The only thing you canât upgrade on a mountain bike is the shape of it. Some manufacturers just use old, outdated steep-and-short frames as the basis for their cheap bikes. Others make new frames but weirdly seem to think that the fresh riders likely to be buying at this price point would benefit from something thatâs twitchy and sketchy rather than stable and confident.
As a rough guide, 120mm travel bikes should have a 67-degree head angle, moving towards 65-degree as travel extends to 150mm and youâre getting faster on descents. Reach figures should be 460+mm on a large, with a 50mm or shorter stem and a 760mm or wider bar for decent power steering.
How We Tested
Our team of experienced testers spent many hours and miles using these mountain bikes for their intended purpose, as well as pushing the bikes limits outside of their primary intent. We raced them, rode them on our local trails, and hit the bike park. Often we swapped tires and other components to get a better understanding of each bike. After a lot of sweaty, dirty miles, we considered the full picture weighing not just performance and handling, but also, price, comfort, value, and reliability.
