A more budget-friendly choice, the Light and Motion VIS Pro 1000 Trail light offers versatility for mountain bikers, gravel riders and endurance cyclists. In fact, itâs great for anyone who likes to ride through the night.
It offers an hour and a half runtime at full brightness, but if you want to also use it for commuting then you get a whopping 720hrs at the 500 lumen âsafe pulseâ setting. It also charges impressively fast, getting a full charge in only 2.5 hours.
A range of included mounts means you can pop it on your helmet, your handlebars or your GoPro mounts.
Donât let its small size fool you the Lupine Piko packs a seriously bright punch. This versatile helmet light produces a diffused light beam and runs off an external battery pack. With a relatively quick charge time, the smaller battery pack is full and ready to use in just an hour and a half, so itâs a good option for regular riders with limited time.
The machined aluminum casing is tough and the light is waterproof too. There are two options with the associated battery pack the 3.5Ah FastClick is compact enough to sit on the helmet, while the chunkier 6.9Ah SmartCore will need to sit in your bag or pocket.
Blending a good lumen output with a more accessible price, the Lezyne Multidrive is a versatile light thatâs good value for money.
Should A Road Bike Helmet Feature Padding
Yes. Padding makes a helmet more comfortable but also helps to wick sweat away from your head. An ideal road bike helmet design will feature padding that can be removed for washing and replacement. The style and thickness of padding varies between helmets, so again, it’s worth trying a few models on to see which work the best for you.
The best cycling helmets come with removable padding so they can be washed.

How We Tested The Best Bike Helmets
One of the criteria in selecting the best bike helmets to test was if they had MIPS protection, or the equivalent. MIPS, which in this use stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System, includes a layer that allows the helmet to slide relative to the head, thus reducing rotational forces which can cause concussions or other brain injuries.
Of course, we could not test the helmets under actual crash conditions, so we consulted several test reports that conducted extensive lab-based impact analysis. Those included Virginia Tech and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s evaluation of 162 bike helmets and a 2021 study of 27 helmets tested in oblique impacts published in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering. We also considered the results of a 2020 study conducted by a Swedish insurance company as part of our evaluation.
Below is a chart with the Virginia Tech ratings of the helmets we reviewed the lower the number, the better.
Since fit and comfort are two of the most important features of bicycle helmets, we then head-tested every model, riding many miles in different circumstances to see how they held up under real world use.

Taotronics Led Bike Lights
The TaoTronics LED lights arent specifically designed to be mounted onto a helmet, however, the rear light does come with a helmet mounting strap so it can work well and its bright so its a good choice!
Powering the rear light are two CR2032 batteries and the runtime is comparable to others in this review.
Whilst we arent looking at front lights, I will say that the front light has a maximum lumen output of 700 lumens and a runtime of up to 6 hours, if used on low brightness. It is rechargeable and has a 2000mA sized battery. Its fully waterproof and dustproof. In all honesty, its a great light so its a nice bonus to have.
Both of these lights can be mounted onto your helmet so you get plenty of versatility in this pack.

Is A Lighter Road Bike Helmet Better
As is common with cycling kit, as weight decreases price tends to increase. The best road bike helmets will be lightest in their given category, making them the most comfortable option because they place less strain on your neck.
If you’re a competing cyclist the other advantage of a lighter helmet is increasing your power to weight ratio, 50g might not make much difference to most of us mortals, but to a top professional looking for any marginal gain, it becomes significant.

The Monteer Is A Monster
Weight: 605g | Max lumens: 8,000 | Rating: 9/10
Pros: Mega bright.
Cons: Not quite as polished as other premium lights.
First off we do need to point out that the 8,000 lumens claim of this light is rather optimistic. But it is still really, really flipping bright. Even if the real-world lumens is more light 4,000, thats still significantly more than its rivals. Mounting the lamp is easy enough and will be familiar to any Garmin twist-lock user out there. In fact, during the day you can leave the bracket on for holding your Garmin or whatever, which some will find very useful. The pool of light is massively broad as well bright. The only niggle we had was the lack of programmability into the switch you have to cycle through all the modes one by one, which can be tedious when you only ever really use low and high.
Weight: 238g | Max lumens: 3,200 | Rating: 10/10
Pros: Well made unit that gives out clean light pool.
Cons: Bar clamp a tad fiddly to install/adjust.
The Audi Q-series of the mountain bike light world. The Toro being the dinkiest of Exposures multi-LED self-contained designs. As with the MaXx D and Six Pack from Exposure, we find the bar clamp a bit fiddly to install/remove but theres no arguing with its solidity once in place. The programmability on offer is comprehensive and brilliantly all the info is etched on the housing itself and the rear display also makes it clear what youre doing.
Weight: 383g | Lumens: 3,200 | Rating: 10/10

How To Buy The Best Bike Lights
Buying the best bike lights is really down to personal preference and the sort of cycling requirements you might have. Some folk like a front lamp thatâs powerful enough to illuminate a forest, while others want something a little more discreet that clips onto the back of a helmet or jacket.
Likewise, others prefer to illuminate a valve cap and create some funky neon lighting effects while riding at night, while others might want the latest smart technology that can offer crash or theft alerts and deliver riding stats to a bespoke app.
So, first work out what you need and the amount of illumination you require, as those front lamps that kick out serious lumens can cost upwards of £400, while the smarter light kits with impressive additional features are also a tad on the pricey side.
Of course, itâs possible to get small light sets that cost around £10, but these tend to have relatively poor lumen outputs and can be susceptible to braking and chewing though disposal batteries like they are going out of fashion.
Other things worth noting are whether the light has a flashing and a constant mode, the former obviously draws more attention to you and your bike and therefore can be a little safer. Also consider whether it is rechargeable and how easy said light is to both install and remove from your bars, seat post or backpack.
Best Time Trial Helmets
Time trial cycling helmets are similar to aero helmets in that they will be wind tunnel tested and have significant watt-saving data. Typically they will have a longer âtailâ than an aero helmet, and will focus solely on function.
Bear in mind that these are all about out and out speed from A to B so might not be suitable/ UCI or other governing body legal for anything other than time trialing events.
The wind-cheating silhouette of the Giro Ultimate Aerohead will maximise your performance with its excellent aerodynamic design which also boosts plenty of ventilation with its four Wind Tunnel vents, although don’t by any means expect it to be highly breathable.
On test we actually used the even more aerodynamic Aerohead Ultimate, but with the same fit it is an almost like for like comparison, and are confident when saying this version is still one of the best road bike helmets in the time trial category.
It’s rare to find a Time Trial/ Track helmet that not only which offers MIPS but also an impressive field of view, thanks to the wrap around eye shield made by ZEISS Optics. The shield is kept secure with a magnetic anchor attachment and it can also be stored in a flipped up position.
There’s little venting though, with the visor covering the two small slot vents in the front of the shell, making for a ride that was warm, if manageable.

Cooling And Air Vents
The last factor that we think you should take into consideration when selecting your Bike Helmet, revolves around the Cooling and Air Vents.
These are the holes and gaps that you see on the Helmet, and these act as the cooling system for it, and they are definitely a detail of the Helmet that you need to pay attention to.
Different brands opt for different sizes, numbers, and shapes of cooling vents, so if this is a detail you put a lot of time into you may want to do some research in what cooling and air vents brands offer and see which ones suit you.
Clever designs can incorporate smart and unique ways of allowing air to go through the Helmet, so be sure to pay attention to do this.

Why Using A Helmet With Integrated Lights
Now weve just ran through the best Bike Helmets that you can buy, but just in case youre unsure of why you should buy a Helmet with integrated lights, allow us to alleviate your concerns.
Firstly, and perhaps the most obvious reason for purchasing a Helmet with LED lights is the element of protection that it provides for your head.
A study of bike helmet use around the world, with data from over 64,000 cyclists, found that helmets reduce the risk of a serious head injury by 65%, a drastic reduction of head injuries.
Not to mention that if youre either a solo rider, or somebody who likes to cycle at night, then a Helmet with integrated LED lights is pretty much a necessity for you.
Firstly, the LED lights help to generate visibility of you as you use your cycle, and this means that people in cars and general pedestrians can notice you and avoid crashing into you, which is of course a major help. Not to mention that in some countries it is illegal to ride on a public road after dark without lights and reflectors, and in that case the LED integrated Bike Helmet becomes something you need .
