Guyton Rails To Trails

As the name suggests, this paved trail in nearby Guyton, is built into an abandoned railway. While the trains stopped running the line more than a half-century ago, transportation of the two-wheeled variety is keeping the old Central of Georgia Railway relevant. At just under a mile, its not the longest trail around, but its a fun little sprint through Georgia history.

Road Biking In Savannah

Trying to see if we can fit some biking into our Savannah trip. We are road bikers, not mountain and would like to know if the city has bicycle paths or trails. I found some reference to beautiful biking through the historic district but couldn’t access the information. We love the thought of enjoying Savannah’s history but would also like to get some exercise in as well.

We live in GA and go to Savannah occasionally. We really enjoy biking around the squares to sightsee. However, this is slow riding with some potentially uneven payment. Don’t know how nice it would be on a skinny tire road bike, we usually take our fat tire bikes. Shocks aren’t really needed, mine is old mtb with no shocks, my wife rides a hybrid. All you have to do is be alert to the slow traffic around the squares and the tour buses. But you should not have a problem.

We also ride out to Forsyth Park. You could then ride on out to the Bonaventure Cemetary. Most riding along side streets, some along busier rode for short ways out near Cemetary. My wife did not have any problem riding and she is somewhat paranoid about road riding.

Farther ride could be along the highway out toward Tybee Island or a little farther along to Skidaway State Park.

I don’t think you will find any off road trails, but you probably won’t have any problems in the area.

To me bikes are a great way to see Savannah. But it can get pretty hot in late spring/summer.

A Varied And Wonderful Trail

I rode the entire Silver Comet trail starting in Alabama on the Chief Ladgia Trail overnighting in Dallas. The Silver Comet Trail is completely paved, well marked and in nearly perfect condition. There are many road crossings but I never had an issue finding the trail and the few busier road crossings have traffic signals to make crossing safer. There are a few important things to point out however. The large hill that parallels a landfill outside of Cedartown throws out the rail trail of the Silver Comet. It is very steep and riding from West to East there were two downhills where I had to dismount because I didn’t feel safe going down a steep curving decline. Powder Springs and Rockmart have embraced the Silver Comet more as they have more signage directing trail users to local businesses, Cedartown hasn’t done the same. The scenery is gorgeous with great variation from streams, tunnels, a few trestles and plenty of trees providing much needed shade during the Labor Day Weekend heat. I encountered more trail users in the last 20 miles from Dallas to Smyrna than I did in the 80 previous miles from Alabama to Dallas. Almost all trail users were courteous and every driver I encountered at intersections yielded to cyclists. I highly recommend contacting Rooted Trading Company in Powder Springs if you want to arrange shuttle service to anywhere on either the Silver Comet or Chief Ladgia Trails.
