Difference Between An Electric Bike And Electric Scooter
Electric bicycles have many names including e-bikes, pedal assist bikes, electric assist bikes, and many others, but theyâre not to be confused with electric scooters. E-bikes and e-scooters have one distinguishing factor that makes all the difference and it all starts with a pedal.
E-bikes which are also called pedal assist for a reason still incorporate the pedal and gives the rider the ability to manually operate entirely, pedal with assistance of electric power, or use electric power exclusively.

Combination Of An Ebike With Throttle And Pedal Assist:
These are electric bikes that are fitted with a motor powerful enough to provide assistance when pedaling or using a throttle function.
The cyclist can decide to use the motor power entirely without pedaling or use the bikes throttle as you pedal, to get a better power boost.
Some throttles are controlled by switching on and off, providing the bike with a uniform speed. There are also throttles that you can twist and hold to determine the speed of your bike.

Are Electric Bikes Safe To Ride
Yes. Electric bikes share the same frame and fit as a regular bike, theres just an added battery and compact motor. Electric bikes look, feel, and ride like a traditional bike with an added boost there to help when you need it. We of course recommend that you wear a helmet when riding, obey all traffic laws and use caution to remain safe.
It’s Called Pedal Assist
The electric bicycles that we stock are designed to complement your pedaling, not replace it. A good electric bicycle starts with a torque sensor that measures how hard you push on the pedals. You set a power levelfrom low assistance to highand your electric assist bicycle gives you power in proportion to your pedaling, allowing you to ride farther, faster, and with greater ease and enjoyment. Torque-sensed pedal assist has been described by customers as “like magic,” a “superman sensation,” as well as “the best anti-depressant ever invented.”

Electric Bike Jargon Buster
How much additional assistance your motor gives you as you ride. Most ebikes will have multiple levels to switch between as you ride, depending on the terrain . Some will be able to automatically switch support level up and down, depending on where youre riding or to conserve your battery levels. More power means less range.
Short for Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle, this is the official legal term often used by the UK government to describe ebikes.
Output for an ebike motor is typically measured in watts. Thats a measure of the maximum power it can produce.
Ebike battery capacity is measured in watt hours or, in other words, how many watts a battery can put out and for how long. So if a 250-watt motor was fed by a 250Wh battery and run at full power, the battery would drain in an hour. In practice, your motor doesnt run at full power much of the time, so your battery will last longer than this.
For eMTBs, in particular, torque is also an important figure. It measures how much turning force a motor will put in, something that helps add to your own effort especially when climbing hills.

- Be mindful of the torque in low gears
With bikes, its often assumed that buyers who want a comfortable ride need to sacrifice speed or good looks to get it. But Aventon throws that idea out the window with its latest Pace 500 e-bike.
As e-bikes rise in popularity, so are their prices. Some models carry high four-digit price tags, with an increasing number of models now costing over ten grand. But if you arent seeking the pinnacle of performance there are still plenty of cheap e-bikes available. And of that bunch, the Pace 500 is an exceptional deal for riders looking to cruise the bike path, ride along the boardwalk with a partner, or roll around the neighborhood with the kids.
The Three Classes Of E
After determining which style of bike is right for you, the next major consideration is which class of e-bike best fits your needs. In the U.S., there are three classes defined by the type of assist and how fast the motor will propel you. Most electric bikes are defined as class 1 or 3. Class 1 bikes have a motor that assists while youre pedaling, up to 20 mph. Class 3, also known as speed pedelec, can also have up to a 750w motor , but can assist you up to 28 mph. Both are allowed in most states and cities without the need for a license.
Rare just a year ago, Class 2 models are becoming more popular, especially at lower prices. These models have a throttle that can propel a bike up to, and maintain, 20 mph without having to continuously pedal.
Some bikes blur the lines. Aventons popular Pace 500, for example, is technically a Class 3 e-bike in that it reaches speeds up to 28 mph, but it also has a throttle that tops out at 20 mph .

S Of An Electric Bike
At the outset, an electric bike does not greatly differ from a standard bike. An e-bike comes with the standard components that a regular bike has including the frame, suspension fork, brakes, pedal, wheels, saddle, and chain mechanism. The main difference lies in the three additional components, which are the motor, battery, and controller.
Let’s discuss each component one by one below:
Like any other electric-powered equipment, the battery is the one in charge of delivering power to the engine motor, to keep it running. A high-quality product should come with a high-quality and reliable battery to ensure its utmost performance. When it comes to e-bikes, the battery can help ensure that you get a smooth ride and comfortable ride for daily commuting that’s capable of giving fast top speed and longer range. For a better understanding, here’s a good article that will explain how ebike batteries work.
ELECTRIC BIKE CONTROLLER
Like any other electric equipment, an e-bike also comes with a controller that combines all the electric mechanisms together – it’s essentially the brain of your e bike. It’s where you control the movements of the e bike especially when accelerating and stopping. The main function of an e bike controller is to navigate taking into consideration the controls set for throttle, speed sensor, display, battery level, and motor status. It’s basically the means where you can control the e bike.

Do You Need A License To Drive An Electric Bike
In some areas, you need a license for an ebike, but in other areas, you do not. In twenty states, you do need a license, generally since there are not yet ebike laws, meaning that they are treated in the same manner as automobiles. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the state of California and nine other states Washington, Michigan, Illinois, Connecticut, Colorado, Utah, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Arizona define ebikes and use a three-tiered classification system to categorize them. In the ten states with the ebike classification system, all but Illinois exempt ebike riders from the need for a license, registration, and insurance.
A class 3 ebike is the most strictly regulated because it assists up to a higher maximum speed. This class has a speedometer and assists the rider up to 28 miles per hour, while class 1 and 2 models both stop assisting the rider at 20 mph. A helmet is only legally mandatory for class 3 ebikes in California, as is also true in Tennessee. Also in California, you cannot drive a class 3 ebike unless you are at least 16 years old, which is true in Utah as well.
