Riding on gravel, sand, snow and up hills is fun but requires fat tires, wheels, and frames which all add weight too much weight for most people to pedal comfortably without the electric assist. There are electric fat bikes of all types with only their large 4+ inch wide sized tires in common, so think first about where and how you will ride. They can go anywhere, do anything, some even fold. See all the details and even more winners on our best electric fat bikes page.

Affordable Folding Class 3 And Easily Upgradeable
Weight: 64 pounds | Range: 45 miles | Motor: 500W in hub | Class: Class 3 with throttle | Tires: CST 3 x 20 fat tires | Brakes: 160mm mechanical disc brakes
Electric bike prices tend to bottom out around $1,000it just isnt practical to make an ebike for much less. Lectrics XP 2.0 might be among the cheapest bikes you can buy , but its so thoughtfully designed that its a genuinely good choice for city riders on a budget, not some sort of reluctant consolation prize.
The Lectric XP 2.0 is powered by a 500-watt rear hub motor with a 48-volt battery that can get you as much as 45 miles on a single charge. Its a Class 3 bike that tops out at 28mph on pedal assist and 20mph with the throttle. It has integrated lights, fenders, 3-inch fat tires andsurprisinglyeven a hydraulic suspension. Of course, weve buried the lede: This is a foldable bike, easily folding to about half its normal size thanks to a locking hinge in the middle of the frame.
Of course, no $1000 bike is going to be perfect at 64 pounds, its a little heavy, and it can hard to handle when folded up. The twist throttle isnt nearly as convenient as a lever and the mechanical disc brakes are both loud and lack the power of hydraulics. But the price is compelling, and Lectric has mostly made the right choices about how to balance cost against performance. There are even inexpensive upgrade kits to add a more comfy suspension seat post and both front and rear cargo baskets.
Rad Power Bikes Radrunner 2
Power: 750W | Weight: 65 lb. | Top speed: 20 mph
- Plenty of space for cargo
- Twitchy steering at speed
Odds are that youve either seen this bike or one that looks a lot like it. Whether you consider it a bike is irrelevantits cheap, useful, and thrives in the city. The e-tility design gives you three storage areas: the front rack, the rear rack, and the mid-frame center console. If the latter feature seems gimmicky, thats understandable, but we instantly found it useful for loose ends and anything that couldnt get wet. These accessories can quickly turn this $1,200 e-bike into a $1,500 or $1,700 e-bike, but they allow you to retrofit the bike to haul kids or pizzas or fresh fish . The fat tires and short wheelbase make the RadRunner 2 a capable off-roader and maneuverable urban bike, although the steering is too sharp as youre moving fast. That said, most customers wont ride the RadRunner 2 as aggressively the bike is pleasant and nimble around town, ideal for its intended purpose.

Best Speed Trike: Outrider Trike
How about a speed trike? This one allows you to achieve big-time speed. If youve ridden one of these trikes, this one will probably be the most powerful youve experienced. It tops out at 20mph, which is quite the formidable speed for a trike like this!
This is a strong and durable trike and is even suitable for off-road riding. There are front and rear air-shock suspension, and an electronic drive system. The base battery gets about 15-35 miles per charge, but there is the option to upgrade to about 60-140 miles per charge.
Overall, this is a very specific type of bike, but if youre in the market for a fast, off-road e-trike, then this might be exactly what you are looking for.
Can I Ride An Electric Bike Without A Licence
If you have an Electric assist bike then you dont need a licence at all. However, if you are on any vehicle that has a motor without pedals, or can go above 15.5mph with pedals, then you will require a CBT licence and the vehicle needs to be registered with the DVLA.For full licencing information, please see our electric bike licence page.

Aventon Soltera Review: Range Test & Battery Performance
The Solteras 36V, 10Ah battery is certainly on the smaller end of the spectrum when it comes to e-bike batteries, but it suits the lightweight and lightly-powered commuter very nicely.
In our range testing the Soltera logged 23.95 miles with an average speed of 16.9 mph in PAS 5 and 49.49 miles with an average speed of 12.62 mph in PAS 1. Those are awesome results from a budget electric city bikes.
Compared to other e-bikes in its class, such as the Propella V4.0 and the Ride1UP Roadster V2, the Soltera far outperformed both bikes in both tests. Which shouldnt be surprising considering the Soltera comes stock with a larger battery than most in its category. Both the Propella and the Ride1UP come with a 250Wh battery to power a similarly sized motor.
I also really like how Aventon hid the battery neatly inside the frame but still kept it removable. Again, compared to the two other bikes, this is another improvement: The Ride1UPs battery is integrated into the frame but isnt removable and the Propellas battery is removable but not integrated.
State Bicycle Co 6061 Ebike Commuter
Power: 350W | Weight: 39 lb. | Top speed: 20 mph
- Only available in black
- Lights not included
Around the Bicycling offices, we like State for its practical, no-nonsense approach to designing bikes. As a result, the brand’s bikes consistently perform well in our ride testing. The only problem, until now State hasn’t had an e-bike. For its first entry into the heavily contested commuter e-bike category, State introduced a bike that is decisively practical and no-nonsenseright down to the name and color.
From across the street, the plainly named 6061 eBike Commuter doesn’t look all that different from other State 6061 models. But get up close and you’ll find an LG 36V10Ah cell Lithium battery neatly hidden in the frame’s downtube powering the 250W rear hub motor. To keep maintenance easy, State equipped the eBike Commuter with a singlespeed drivetrain . The bike rolls on 700c wheels with thick, 45mm wide Kenda e-bike tires and stops with cable disc brakes front and rear. The 6061 eBike Commuter isn’t big on features or color optionswith three sizes offered and matte black being the only colorbut if you’re after a good deal on a sleeky bike, this is a great new choice.

Weight: 76.7 pounds | Range: 45 miles | Motor: 750W in hub | Class: Class 3 with throttle | Tires: Rad Power Bikes custom 22 x 3 | Brakes: Tektro 180mm front and rear mechanical disc brakes
An electric bike might not let you sell the SUV, but you might be surprised by just how much cargo your ebike can carry. Of course, to really bring home the groceries or make a run to the FedEx center, youll probably need more than a commuter bike with a basket hanging off the handlebars. There are some bikes that really lean into cargo, and the RadWagon 4 is one of the best. Not only is it on the cheaper end of the cargo bike spectrum, but it is powerfulthe bike is built on a 750-watt motorand has a range of about 45 miles. In addition to the usual pedal assist, theres a throttle for unassisted power.
The frame is designed from the ground up for carrying capacity. The RadWagon can support 350 pounds and the back end modularly supports a pair of baby seats, a cargo pad, side saddles, delivery boxes and more. If you need to haul stuff, this bike is up to the challenge.
Rad Power Radexpand 5
Power: 750W | Weight: 62.5 lb. | Max Assisted Speed: 20 mph | Estimated Range: Up to 45 miles
Rad Power Bikes Rad Power RadExpand 5
- Mechanical disc brakes arent as powerful as discs
- Possibly too small for taller riders
Another bike that nails the utilitarian trifecta of being fat-tired, folding, and e-assisted, the RadExpand 5 improves on its predecessor, the RadMini 4, by shaving five pounds off the bikes total weight and widening the tires from three to four inches. The result is a bike that wont win any classic style awards but serves up a ton of functionality in a powerful but compact and stowable package. The bike has a low step-thru frame, so it fits riders between about 4-foot-10 and 5-foot-10, and a 275-pound capacity, which allows you to also haul cargo on the included rear rack. Mechanical disc brakes come standard on all Rad Power bikesthough theyre not as powerful as hydraulic discs, they get the job done. The bike also comes outfitted with a front light and LED tail light, and a 7-Speed MicroShift derailleur thats easy to operate via the thumb shifter.
