As a result of the watershed’s integrity and undisturbed natural system, New York is one of only four major cities in the United States the majority of whose drinking water is pure enough not to require purification through plants. The city’s municipal water system is the largest in the United States, moving over one billion gallons of water per day a leak in the Delaware aqueduct results in some 20 million gallons a day being lost under the Hudson River. The north of the city is undergoing construction of a $3.2 billion water purification plant to augment New York City’s water supply by an estimated 290 million gallons daily, representing a greater than 20% addition to the city’s current availability of water. The ongoing expansion of , an integral part of the New York City water supply system, is the largest capital construction project in the city’s history, with segments serving Manhattan and the Bronx completed, and with segments serving Brooklyn and Queens planned for construction in 2020. In 2018, New York City announced a $1 billion investment to protect the integrity of its water system and to maintain the purity of its unfiltered water supply.

Five Boro Bike Tour History

The event began on June 10, 1977 as the Five Boro Challenge with about 250 participants. The original tour was 50 miles long and started and ended in Queens. What started as a one-time event became a tradition the next year when the New York City Mayor Ed Koch embraced the idea of a city-wide bike tour. The distance was shortened and the word challenge was changed to tour to make the event more appealing to the general public. That year, the number of participants increased tenfold to around 3000.

We’re Keeping Our Neighborhoods Green

Recycle-A-Bicycle is our personal spin on a local bike shop. Weve called Brooklyn home for well over a decade, so its no stretch to say we know the neighborhood.

In addition to providing New Yorkers with gear and hostingarea service programs, RAB accepts donations of old, used, and broken bikes, which we completely restore, refurbish, and sell. What cant be repaired is salvaged for parts. This means were not just giving thousands of well-loved bikes a second chance: In 2019, RAB reused or repurposed nearly 12 tons of material. Thats the same as saving 77.95 metric tons of CO2e!

The look of joy on his face when he took off for the first time is something Ill never forget. I hope every NYC parent learns about this amazing resource and the supportive staff at Bike New York.

In 2019, Bike New York began a concentrated effort to actively engage in and spearhead local-level advocacy initiatives. Within its first year, projects included:

  • Providing expertise and detail to the City Councils Streets Master Plan Bill, which passed in October of last year. It commits the city to install 50 miles of protected bike lanes per year starting in 2022, and to measure bike network connectivity.
  • Supplying a broad set of ideas for Mayor de Blasios Green Wave Plan, issued in July 2019. It raises NYC DOTs target for protected bike lanes from 20 to 30 miles per year in 2020 and 2021. It also calls for more attention to the quality of barriers along protected bike lanes, bike-speed signal timing, and bike parking.
  • Producing a Bike Network agenda to take advantage of congestion pricing.

And in the summer of 2020, Bike New York launched its new Street Action Now! program to instruct a cohort of students in how to analyze unsafe street conditions, perform a street audit, and work with community boards to provoke real change on their blocks.

We Respond To The Moment

When COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, Bike New York was forced to temporarily suspend its in-person programming. Though cycling events came to a halt, the need for bike resources swelled as a huge influx of people turned to cycling for transportation and recreation. We knew we couldnt slow down.

To address the sudden surge in demand for accessible bike education, we pivoted from teaching in the streets to bringing our lessons to the virtual classroom. Since launching our digital education program and Virtual Bike Education Resource Hub in April, weve helped hundreds, if not thousands, of students build their bike skills, confidence, and knowhowand with aspiring cyclists from across the country tuning in to our weekly classes, were making a difference far beyond the five boroughs.

Five Boro Bike Tour: Sweet Sweet Revenge

2022 TD Five Boro Bike Tour

Last week I shared my plans to exorcise the demons that have haunted me for decades by unleashing my vengeance upon the Five Boro Bike Touror, more prosaically, to show my son a good time since I was able to wrangle us a couple of fee entries thanks to that promotional video I did for the organizers. Well, this past Sunday was the fateful day, and Im pleased to report I was successful on all counts.

As a semi-professional blogger and bike media barnacle my registrations included a preferred starting position and media credentials. The Tour route is 40 miles, and riding to the start from our home would have meant an extra 15 miles on top of that, which would have been a bit much for my almost-but-not-quite 12-year-old son. So we elected to take the subway in order to make our 7:30am start time, and headed to our local station at 6am.

Once on the train, we affixed our numbers. Like a schmuck Id heeded the Tours no-backpack rule and instead went with a handlebar bag as well as that charity ride mainstay, the fanny pack. With only twist ties at my disposal I couldnt put the number on the bag, but happily the non-aero brake cables of the Vengeance Bike came to the rescue:

Despite the early hour we were not the only Five Boro riders on the train, and as far as I was concerned the race had already begun. The first attack came at 168th St., where a breakaway group made the transfer to the A train in an attempt to open a gap. However, I decided to let the move go:
