Is It Ok To Store A Bike Vertically On The Wall Can I Hang A Bike By The Front Wheel
It is generally considered OK to store a bike vertically on the wall. This is because it evenly distributes the bikes weight and prevents the frame from being damaged.
Also, hanging a bike by the front wheel is generally considered acceptable. This is because it prevents the bike from falling over and getting damaged.
Tips To Hanging Your Bicycle
2 Contact Points as a Bonus If youre worried about all the weight of your bike being on a singular spot on your bicycle then you can use two hooks to hang your bike. This will spread out the weight.Hang Horizontally You dont have to hang your bike from the ceiling. If you have the wall space you can put two hooks in the wall, and hang it horizontally. One of the benefits of this is that you can hang the bicycle on its frame rather than the wheels. The frame can definitely handle the weight of the entire bike.
Wipe down the Wheels Make sure to clean off your wheels after riding. If you hang your bike youll want to make sure theyre clean before hanging.
If you hang the bike with a dirty wheel you can get dirt or sand on the hooks soft cover which could scratch the rims of your bike. Not only will it keep it scratch free, but it will help you bike last.
Be Careful Taking it Down Ive heard stories of people damaging their bikes, because they were rushing to get their bike off the hook and had it crash down. I know you want to ride your bike as soon as possible, but be gentle getting your bike down.
Cover your Bike if its Outside The elements will slowly corrode and deteriorate your bicycle. Perhaps youre thinking of hanging your bike outside on the side of the house to save space indoors.
Also make sure to lock it up if its outside unless you live in an ultra safe area. Ive had two bikes stolen from my backyard. Not a fun experience!

Bike storage hooks are about as simple as it gets. We love bike hooks because they allow us to hang bikes wherever there happens to be just enough space on the garage wall. No need to find enough room for wall rails to accommodate five bikes are more you just need the space to fit one bike!
While all bike storage hooks are pretty similar, we appreciate the red rubber sleeve on the Delta hook that protects the bikes spokes and wheel from potential damage. These bike hooks can also be purchased with a rear wheel tray that prevents messy tire marks on the garage wall.
Steadyrack: The Vertical Bike Storage Rule Breaker
The most popular vertical storage solution is the Steadyrack Classic Bike Rack . Why do so many people like it? Because it fixes many of the disadvantages that I talk about above!
Steadyrack Vertical Bike Rack |
---|
So while lifting and maneuvering your bike onto most vertical racks can be quite tricky , with the Steadyrack it’s super easy …
You simply wheel the bike forwards until the front wheel is cupped by the metal cradle, which then supports the wheel in place. The cradle fits wheels from 20 – 29″ and tires up to 2.4″ wide.
Also, while most vertical racks leave the bike sticking out into the room and taking up a huge amount of space, with the Steadyrack you have the option of swiveling it towards the wall so it’s much less intrusive.
The Steadyrack works well inside small homes
You can get the bike pretty close to the wall which is a massive bonus in small rooms. And if you’ve got multiple bikes it’s easy to stagger them, much like a vertical version of the Gootus Pedal Rack.
There is also a rear wheel stabilizer that cradles the back tire, keeping the bike straight and the wall clean and mark free!
When it’s not in use the Steadyrack folds up so that it’s almost flat to the wall, which is also really helpful in small spaces.
And while fat tires and bikes with mudguards won’t fit the the classic Steadyrack, they produce one specially for tires up to 5″ and another one for bikes with fenders !

Are Bicycles With Hydraulic Brakes Ok To Hang Upside Down
This is the one exception to hanging bikes upside down. If you have a bike with hydraulic brakes you shouldnt hang the bike upside down.
According to Shimanos disc brake manual, when turning the bicycle upside down or on its side the brake system may have some air bubbles inside the reservoir tank which are still there when the reservoir tank cover is replaced, or which accumulate in various parts of the brake system when it is used for long periods.
Apparently, if the bike is turned on its side or stored upside down, the air bubbles inside the tank could possibly move towards the calipers.
If this happens, there is a possibility that the brakes wont work as intended. You can read what to do in the manual if youve had your hydraulic brake bike upside down HERE.
Basically, if you decide to hang your bike with hydraulic brakes you need to test the brakes before going for a ride.
Wall Mounted Bike Racks That Look Great While Being Practical
Bikes are excellent for getting around in the city. Theyre practical and fun and they take up relatively little space compared to other vehicles. They do, however, need to be properly stored, usually inside the house. A wall-mounted bike rack solves that problem without taking up valuable floor space. There are lots of indoor bike rack types and designs to choose from and we selected a few of them, the one that we find most interesting.
Vertical bike racks are among the most space-efficient and this one is a perfect example to show this feature. Its called simply Rack and its designed to be used inside a house or apartment. Its made of solid hardwood and powder-coated steel and it has a self-leveling mounting system that allows it to be placed on a variety of surfaces. You can use it for most types of bicycles.
In tight spaces, chances are the only free space you can find on a wall is a horizontal slot. No worries because you can still store your bike there with ease. In fact, theres a bike rack designed specifically for that. Were talking about the Zero Gravity Rack. It takes your bike off the floor and keeps it on the wall without wasting a lot of space there either. Its perfect for small apartments.

If You Have No Free Wall Space At All: Feedback Sports Velo Column

Also great
*At the time of publishing, the price was $360.
If you dont have a clear wall but you do have space elsewhere in a room, a compression column is likely your best option for bike storage. This type of rack can hold one or two bikes horizontally, just like a gravity stand. The best one we found is the Feedback Sports Velo Column.
Like the other compression column we tested, the Velo Columns bike-holding arms attach to little plates that slide into channels on either side of the aluminum column. When assembling, you screw the arms base and the plate together, and tighten the screws until the arm wont move. Unlike Gear Ups column, though, the Velo Columns sliding plate has little hooks that clasp the base of each arm, so the plate wont slip down the inside of the channel if you happen to let go of it while youre juggling the arm, screws and screwdriver during assembly.
This pole also feels more solid than the competition because its manufactured as one main piece, with an insert at the top that you can use to adjust the columns length from 84¾ inches to 121 inches. One other advantage of the Velo is that the top of the column is spring-loaded, so it compresses as you push the column into position and then expands to wedge itself in.
