The Carbon fiber bike frame is characterized by ultra-durable, lightweight, and vibration reduction characteristics. Being more expensive than steel and aluminum frames, carbon is one of the most used road bike frame materials on higher-end bikes. Also, carbon bike frames are used on most mid-high end bicycles on the mountain bike range as well.

Mountain Bike Head Tube Angle

Head angle, or head tube angle, is the angle between the front fork of your mountain bike and the ground. Although there are other parameters that go into what makes the front wheel behave, this is the key metric that the industry uses to determine front-wheel characteristics. A slack mountain bike head angle is a lower number relative to a steep head angle . A slacker head angle will, in general, be more stable at high speeds as well as feel more comfortable on steeper terrain. Conversely, your bike will steer lazily and flop from side to side on uphill terrain – you will need to make more body position changes in order to tackle steep up hills, such as keeping your weight on the front tire so you don’t wheelie yourself off the trail. Conversely, bikes with steep head angles feel like the front wheel is planted and steer nimbly on uphill terrain, while feeling twitchy and unstable on fast downhill terrain. If your inclinations are towards pedaling uphill, youll pick a bike with a steeper head angle and vice-versa if you like to head down.

Awesome Axle Path: Your Wheelbase Is More Consistent

We discovered a balance with that others are just now starting to find with our Pivot Point working its magic. The first part of the axle path is regressive, meaning it grows to counteract a shrinking wheelbase. When descending the chunk, having a bike shrink on you can alter your handling and negatively effect your ride. The opposite of that is having too regressive of an axle path can cause your wheelbase to grow too much in corners throwing your corner speed off and causing an unpredictable handling characteristic in the twisties. Our mid-high pivot is the balance that others are just now realizing is working for them better as opposed to going with either ends of the spectrum.

Best Hardtail Mountain Bike Frames

Cube Mountain Bike Frame for sale in UK

Hardtail MTB frames are considerably less complex than full-suspension frames. Although newer models have advanced geometry, hardtail MTB frames typically look like early mountain bikes. They consist of a traditional bike frame with two triangles split by the seat tube and a suspension fork on the front.

Depending on the style of riding the bike is intended for, hardtail MTBs have varying head and seat tube angles. This is largely to do with the amount of travel in the fork, which is usually more if the bike is intended for downhill riding.

Ibis Ripmo Af Ngx Review

Words & Photos by Cole Gregg

Every time Ive talked with an Ibis owner, they have had great things to say about their bikes and seem to be life-long fans. Being a fan of DW-Linked bikes myself, I was rather stoked to get this Ibis Ripmo AF for a long-term review. I was even more excited when I found out I was getting the coil-sprung version that would be ready for some aggressive shredding.

Due to availability and COVID-19 craziness, Ibis could only send out a 2020 specd model as inventory was low for 2021. For all intents and purposes the bikes will ride very similarly, however there are some key updates to the 2021 model related to the parts list that are explained below. We received this bike in late September and rode it in the PNW and down in Phoenix Arizona for a wide offering of conditions from greasy root fests to dry days on completely blown out trails in the desert.

Starting out with the groupset, Ibis specd an all SRAM offering with Truvativ Descendant alloy 175mm DUB cranks with a 32T chain ring. The derailleur was upgraded from a 12 speed NX Eagle to a GX Eagle, while the shifter got the same GX treatment upgrade. The NX kit tested worked but did have some lag even when fine-tuned was a little noisy when shifting and had questionable feeling at the shifter. The GX upgrade is spot on with what I would want if I was purchasing this bike, so 21 customers are in luck.

Mountain Bike Bottom Bracket Height

$400 Carbon Fiber Mountain Bike Frame – TRIFOX MFM200

The bottom Bracket height on your mountain bike is the distance between the ground and the center of your cranks. Some manufacturers refer to Bottom Bracket Drop, which is the vertical distance between the wheel axles and the bottom bracket. They effectively measure the same trait of the mountain bike, which is how low your center of mass is. Just like your lowered sports car, bikes with low bottom brackets corner like theyre on rails and transition from turn to turn effortlessly. The tradeoff here is that the earth isnt flat and trails arent typically paved smooth the lower your bottom bracket, the more likely youll clip rocks, roots or logs youre trying to hop over. If youre a skilled and savvy rider, you can make sure your pedals arent down when passing over obstacles, but that means not pedaling over rough terrain and can be difficult to do when youre brains starved for oxygen on a climb or youre traveling at blinding speeds.

Best Track Bike Frames

Track bikes usually have the most intense and aggressive frame geometry, placing the rider far forward over the handlebars in the most aerodynamic position. This is the perfect position to exert the most amount of power on the pedals and get the most speed out of the bike.

Track bike frames have the shortest wheelbases, very steep seat and head tube angles, and minimal fork rake. They are also designed with very stiff materials for maximum power transfer on the drivetrain.

What You Get For Sizing Up

When it comes to mountain bike sizing, Reach tends to be what changes more from Small to Large than Stack. Almost all mountain bikes are trying to get as low as possible to buy the rider range of motion in the cockpit of the bike so youll see a lot of bikes with an increase in Reach. Theres also a minor corresponding increase in Wheelbase as the whole bike itself gets a little bit longer, so you get the benefits of a longer mountain bike. Also, if you happen to have a proportionally longer torso, youll want to size up in order to get a neutral fit, since Reach is primarily whats affected by the size. Flexibility and range of motion in your hips is also something to consider. If bending over and touching your toes sounds like a tall order, a longer bike is going to be a bit more taxing to maintain a low and aggressive riding position. On the other hand, if you know the difference between your Tadasana Pose and your Lotus Pose , a larger size will reward you with a more aggressive riding position. To sum up: If youre flexible, longer in the torso and like to monster-truck over your terrain rather than whip or flick your way around it, size up your mountain bike.

Long Reach And Steep Seat Angle

As the newest 29er in Evils line, the Offerings geometry best reflects modern trends with the steepest seat angle and the longest reaches in Evils line so far.

Like Evils other bikes, the Offering has a pair of flip-chips that allow the bike to be set in two geometries: low, and extra low. With a 140mm fork, the seat angle is 77 degrees in the low , and reach is a rangy 462mm . The head tube angle is 66.6 degrees in the low-setting or 66 in extra low.

Notably, Evil has not jumped on the short-offset-fork trend, sticking to 51mm offset for its bikes. That means the Offerings wheelbase and front center is a bit longer that it would be with a short-offset fork. However the 51mm offset reduces trail so steering is, in theory, a bit livelier than it would be with the shorter offset fork.

Though it has less travel than the Wreckoning, the Offerings longer reach creates a wheelbase that’s longer than the bike’s 161mm-travel big sister.

The chart above shows how the Offering stacks up against other 135 to 145mm travel 29ers. Notable details: It is one of the longest reach bikes in the category but has some of the shortest chainstays. In the low setting, the Evil has a steeper head tube angle and higher BB than many of its competitors, though in the extra-low setting its more mid-pack.

Ragley Blue Pig Review

Independent of wheel or tyre size, all three bikes share a similar profile. The material of choice is 4130 cro-mo, where the slender rear triangle and clean front triangle give all the bikes a modern look. There are other features that unite all models too, like the bridge from the top tube to the seat tube, and the die-straight head tube. All frames also have ISCG tabs on the threaded BB shell for mounting a chain device. No bad thing on any bike with geometry to mirror a modern full-suspension mountain bike at sag numbers that yield a slack 63.5° head angle, low 305mm BB height and short 425mm chainstays on the Blue Pig. At 452mm, the reach on the size large Blue Pig is positively short by full-suspension standards, but we need to remember that as the fork sags into its travel, the reach increases on a hardtail, so the Ragley isnt as short as it seems on paper.

Full Suspension Mountain Bike Frames

Go squishy. Full suspension MTB frames run the gamut from taking a little edge off a cross-country ride to 200mm of travel for keeping the fastest downhill runs under control. Suspension is about confidence, something you should have when it comes to used mountain bike frames sold by The Pros Closet. Everything here has passed a 141-point inspection checklist. The suspension elements have been checked, serviced, and replaced if necessary. Great full-suspension bikes often blur the lines between disciplines. Like giving a cross-country bike more travel so it rips descents more like an enduro bike. Specializeds Stumpjumper does this, though it has to compete with Specializeds Enduro frame for trail bike frame honors.

Mountain Bike Chainstay Length

Chainstay length preference is personal to each rider. This measurement effectively determines the distance between the riders center of mass and the rear axle. Bikes with short chainstays have the rear wheel closer to being under the rider. Short chainstays allow the rider to be more dynamic with their weight. This means easier manuals & wheelies and a general ease of getting the front wheel off the ground. This comes at the expense of overall Wheelbase length, which contributes to stability at speed and over rough terrain. If you want your bike to ride nimbly and like wheelies & manuals, short chainstays are your friend. If you prefer stability, go for a bike with longer chainstays.

Mountain Bike Geometry Measurements

Mountain bike geometry is literally the shape of the bike. The overall shape and geometry of your mountain bike is made up by several different and important measurements. These measurements are important when discussing the fit, feel, and style of a mountain bike, and are often proportional to the style and terrain your bike was intended to perform on. The two main measurements that will affect the way that your bike will fit are Reach and Stack. Keep in mind that while these terms come from the road, triathlon & time trial world, those numbers wont port over from your tri-bike to your mountain bike.

Best Touring Bike Frames

Touring bike frames are traditionally built with steel and designed to be as stable as possible due to the heavy loads they carry. They usually have slacker head tube angles and tapered forks to provide more fork trail. This makes steering slower but more stable, particularly if you are carrying heavy front panniers.

Touring frames usually have longer chainstays to provide better stability and more heel clearance for carrying rear panniers. Traditionally, touring bikes had low bottom brackets for better stability but on more modern bikes built for off-road conditions, this can be higher.
