The Only Place To Rent Mountain Bikes Is Aoa They Do It Right

This is the 2nd year we have rented mountain bikes from AOA for a day trip into the desert. The process of booking online was improved over last year, and I thought last year that they had an efficient process. I was able to select the bike style and sizes for the four bikes we needed and a pick time. When we arrived at their shop to pick them up, they were ready for us, including helmets, water bottles and trail maps. Because I had booked online, the payment was already taken care of. So we just put the bikes in our truck and off we went. The bikes were in great condition and we fortunately didnt need to make use of the tire repair tools supplied with each bike. Returns were just as efficient as we followed the signs for where to put the bikes, helmets and bottles and off we went. A slick process, great equipment, friendly and helpful staff and very reasonable prices. Not sure what they could do better.

Standard Performance Mountain Bikes

The standard front suspension/hardtail mountain bike category covers the basics. Great on smooth moderate difficulty trails, learning to ride on dirt, and exploring unpaved roads. The front suspension absorbs bumps and 27.5 inch wheels provide maximum control on the trail.

What To Know Before Renting A Mountain Bike In Phoenix

Before you rent a mountain bike in Phoenix, here are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Winter months are best for mountain bikingWinter temps in Phoenix are amazing for big days out on the bike, but summer temps? Not so much The highs can easily top 100° which can be miserable and even dangerous. If youre planning a mountain bike trip to Phoenix, I highly recommend only going between November and March.

2. Weekends can get crazyPretty much every trail and network around Phoenix is multi-use, so expect to see heavy traffic on the weekends. The National trail, especially, can get insane with hikers, runners, and bikers. Equestrian traffic is also very popular, but Ive found that they mainly head out to the eastern parts of the city like Superstition West, which from experience is best avoided unless you like horse-trodden trails.

3. Getting the extra insurance is always a good ideaUnless youre planning on sticking to the super mellow desert singletrack, its a good idea to get the extra insurance. While Phoenix isnt the most technical of mountain bike destinations, there are still sharp rim-denting rocks. Its better to be safe than sorry.

4. Most trails in Phoenix allow e-bikesLast time I rode in Phoenix I saw more e-bikes than Ive ever seen before on the trails. Its not a bad thing Im all for getting more people out on bikes but its just something to be aware of. E-bikes are here to stay, so lets embrace them!

Advanced: Gateway Access Area Trails

Desert Park Trail Loop: While trails off of the Gateway Trailhead are only a 1.5 mile ride from the Arizona office, they are not a ride in the park. If highly technical, steep, and rocky trails are your cup of tea, Gateway may be what you are looking for. If your preference is not for challenge and chunk, this is not the ride for you. The Desert Park Trail Loop begins with a rocky climb and provides access to Gateway Loop Trail, Windgate Pass Trail and Toms Thumb Trail. Ride a loop or an out-and-back, either way, youll have a rewarding downhill ride on your return. Try not to get distracted by the McDowell Mountains towering around you!

There are many great and equally challenging options to try from Gateway. Take Paradise Trail south to the Taliesin-Quartz Trail Loop or build a bigger challenge and hit the Double Bypass over Windgate Pass to the east and then back west over Bell Pass.

  • Distance: 5.9 miles
  • Difficulty: Advanced
  • Recommended Bike: Performance-High Performance Full Suspension like the Trek Fuel EX 9.8

If youre looking to ride through the desert terrain of Scottsdale, we will have a mountain bike tuned and ready for you to ride. Choose your route, your rental and start digging!

Intermediate: Mcdowell Mountain Regional Park Trails

McDowell Mountain Regional Park has two great trail networks with something for everyone to ride on. Beginners can ride short loops or out-and-backs and those looking for more of a challenge can add some distance by checking out the fast, directional trails of the McDowell Competitive Track.

If you take the Pemberton Trail, get ready to work hard and play hard. Youll start the ride clockwise up a long, gradual climb on nice singletrack through the McDowell Mountains with monster-sized saguaros on either side of the trail. At the halfway point its time to play. Ride downhill on rewarding high speed double track all the way back to the parking lot. Other local favorite trails include the rocky climb up Dixie Mine on the southern side of the Pemberton Loop or a fun detour up the Scenic Trail beginning and ending at the Pemberton trailhead.
