Every buyer wants a bike that fits, and therefore consulting the correct bike frame size chart is critical.

If the frame is too big or too small, the chances are that youll strain. Thats when you start complaining of backache and knee pain, and thats not all.

Youll also have a low-performing bike, and that sucks away the joy of cycling. So, to avoid all that, you must pick the frame size correctly.

Note that bike frames vary among different bike types.

For example, the sizing guides for road bikes and mountain bikes are different. The same goes for kids cycles and adults bicycles.

So that you can understand my drive, Ill offer you the ultimate sizing guide .

What Size Frame Do I Need If I Am In

Sometimes bike sizing charts or our bike size calculator will recommend two different bike frame sizing options. This means that both the larger and smaller road bike frame size or mountain bike frame size recommended will be suitable for you. To help you make the right choice we asked a bike specialist Dr. Barney Wainwright for some advice.

The key measurement is reach which is how long the bike feels in the riding position. Reach is affected by your trunk length as well as the length of your arms. Trunk length, also known as upper body length or sitting height, is the measurement from your hips to your shoulders.

If your trunk length or sitting height is longer than average, then the larger of the two sizes recommended in the size chart will be ideal.

If on the other hand you have a shorter than average trunk height, then the smaller of the two recommended sizes will probably be best for you.

Once you have your bike there are some adjustments that you can make to fine-tune the fit. Have a look at the other videos in our Boardman Performance Centre bike sizing series in our Bike Fitting Guide to see how easy it is to get the right bike fit.

Steve Behr

Weve put together some broad suggestions on bike sizing below, based on rider height. Its important to remember that this is just a rough guide to help you narrow down your search for the correct-sized bike.

Every persons anatomy is different, so everyone will have different fit requirements. For example, if you have short legs , the standover height of a frame is likely to be of increased importance.

In this scenario, it may be preferable to ride a smaller frame, or a frame with a more compact geometry, and compensate with a longer stem, increased saddle setback or a combination of both.

The best advice we can give you is to consult a professional bike fitter before making an expensive purchase because they can take your individual requirements into account and make recommendations about sizing and fit accordingly.

Bmx Bike Frame Size Chart

BMX bikes have been known as one-frame bicycles for a long time, with only the wheel size coming in variations.

For that reason, we wont focus on the frame size as its unreliable in this case. Well focus on the wheel size instead.

And when talking about the wheel size, youll mostly have to choose a 16, 18 or 20 wheel.

Note, however, that some BMX nowadays come with 24-inch wheels, and a perfect illustration is the Mongoose Title Elite 24 Race BMX

For such, youve to see what the manufacturer recommends. For others , you can use the table that follows.

A Separate Womens Bike Size Chart Is Not Needed

You might not believe it, but the charts above also work for women. They are all the perfect womens bike sizes. We have been fed so many tales about how women need specific bikes and kits. We have all heard the stories of women having a smaller torso than men, therefore needing smaller top tubes.

If you take a woman and a man of the same height, the man will have longer legs, and the women will have a longer torso. The myth is purely anecdotal and is not helped by high heels and the cut of womens trousers. It is a prevalent myth, and one that needs to die. There are references below if you want to know more.

The secret to a womens fit is a womens specific saddle. There is a caveat to this though: 10% of women have a pelvis shaped like a mans pelvis. What women need is a bike that fits, so dont be taken in by the shrink it and pink it marketing. Trek, for instance, has sizing charts that dont change due to gender, but they do pink bikes with a womens specific saddle.

The bicycle size charts are not the end of the story. You can further dial your bike fit and size needed by knowing how to calculate your bikes saddle height. Your saddle height is the most important contact point that you have with your bike.

Your Reach Do You Have A Good Ape Index

How To Choose The Correct Size Of Road Bike Frame

Your reach measurement becomes important if your height and inseam measurements put you in between sizes. In that case, use your reach measurement to decide.

You need to know if you have a long or short reach, which means you need to find out your ape index .

  • If you have a positive ape index then you have a long reach and you should probably go for the larger of the sizes.
  • If you have a negative ape index then you have a short reach and you should probably go for the smaller of the sizes.

For example, say you have an arm span of 160 cm and a height of 160 cm. This would mean your arm span is exactly the same as your height. So, you have an ape index of 1, and therefore an average reach. However, if your arms are shorter, you have a short reach, so if you are between frame sizes, go for the smaller frame size.

Measure Height Without Shoes On

  • Standing with your back against the wall, legs straight but not locked for best result.
  • Stand up as tall as possible when taking this last measurement.
  • Note: Your bikes geometry is one determining factor in how much clearance youll need between your head while sitting versus standing. If you have long arms it may be worth considering sizing down so there is a little more room when standing.

Height And Inseam Are The Key Factors

Height and inside leg measurement remain the key factors. Keep this in mind and make sure your child can comfortably stand over his or her bike.

This is especially important for safety for kids bikes they need to be able to stop safely, and get off safely. Dont put them off bikes for life by making their early experiences scary. Which brings us to the next point.

How Do You Ensure You Dont Get The Frame Size Wrong

Though the sizing chart is essential, it doesnt always guarantee that the bike frame will fit. So, what else can you do?

In addition to looking at the advanced bike sing chart, consider these essentials:

    a) Stand-Over Height

The stand-over height refers to the vertical distance between the bikes top tube and the ground. Generally, this height influences your overall cycling comfort.

So, you have to confirm that you can stand over the bike with both feet touching the ground. In that case, there should be at least a 2-inch allowance between the top tube and the crotch.

    b) Saddle Height

The bike saddle is another component that has a massive bearing on your overall cycling comfort. If the bike saddle is high, youll have a hard time steering the bike.

Luckily, you can adjust the saddle position. So, pick a bike whose saddle height you can change.

    c) The Reach

The Reach also determines your comfort. Note, however, that the Reach is only essential for road bikes.

Its not only vital for riding comfort but also cycling efficiency.

You can know if the Reach is correct by looking at the axle position when you take a seat. If the axle is in front of the handlebar, the Reach is short, and if its behind, the Reach is long.

The good thing about the Reach is that its adjustable. Youve to be careful, nonetheless, not to mess up with the bike handling.

    d) Leg Extension

Overall, you should have a 15-20 degree knee bend to offer you the correct leg extension.

How To Measure Stack And Reach

Measure your bike from the center of the bottom bracket to the top clamp on a straight handlebar and then multiply that number by two.

The stack is how high your bicycles head tube sits above its seat, with shorter bikes having lower numbers and taller bikes higher ones.

The reach is measured from what point at which you should be able to comfortably touch usually this will be when gripping the hoods or right below them all the way back to where it meets up with axel for both front wheels.

    Bike Frame Size Measurement

Bike frame sizes are based on the height of the bike, measuring the length of the seat post tube the part of the bike that the seat post slide into. This measurement is given in metric for road bikes, and imperial for mountain bikes. On most bikes, the size of the frame will be printed somewhere on this part of the frame.

At the end of this post, you can view a short video showing how to measure bike frame size.

Does Wheel Size Affect Sizing Is A Bike Wheel Size Chart Needed

26″? 27.5″? 29″? Trek unravels the wheel size debate

On road bikes and hybrids, no, as these bikes will all have a similarly sized wheel. However, on a mountain bike, the answer is yes. Mountains bikes now come in three different wheel sizes. You can find them with 26 wheels, 27.5 wheels, or 29 wheels. If all three have a 15 frame, there will be a height difference between them due to their wheel size. Bike frames are measured from the middle of their bottom bracket to the end of their seat tube. Your wheel axle height sets your bottom bracket height.

If we take the 26 wheel as the base height, the axle height for a 27.5 wheel will be 0.75 higher. If we then look at the 29 wheel, its axle will be 1.5 higher. This is because the axle sits in the middle of your wheel. We then divide the difference in wheel height by half to get information on how much higher the axle sits.

A 15 frame will be 15.75 on a 27.5 or 16.5 on a 29. Some manufacturers have worked on the mathematics and geometry to keep the differences closer than this. Others have not.The good news is, we have the option of knowing stack and reach, and this will tell us how close the fit is for you. We have more on stack and reach below.

How Is A Bike Frame Measured

The first step in measuring a bike frame is to determine the length of the bike. Measure from one end of the top tube to the other and make sure it is accurate.

Next, measure from where you want your saddle to be located on the seat tube down to where you want your bottom bracket at its lowest point on the frame. The distance between these two points will be used as a measurement for how much clearance you have for installing accessories like fenders or racks.

Finally, measure from left side of head tube to right side head tube and subtract 3 inches from this number so that it reflects how far forward you can go without hitting any obstructions while riding.

This measurement is important because if you are looking for a new bike with an extra-long top tube, then this number will give you an idea of what type of handlebars and headset sizes would work best with your bicycle.
