How to Mount a Water Bottle Cage on Your Bike

I added a bike water holder with a broader base and flexible nylon arm for a snug fit that keeps our belongings secure.

Theres no need to worry about water bottles falling out of the cage because this product features a broad base and flexible nylon arm that come with tight grippers to hold our water bottles in place firmly.

Every part of this product oozes durability due to the high-grade aluminum structure. And unlike breakable and flimsy plastic cages, this one can withstand top speeds and harsh conditions to maintain its sleek and cool look.

The design is considered slightly tougher than carbon, which I can attest to because I used this product, which stands up to years of use.

It features a 23-degree outward curve that allows me to slip out my bottle easily without giving my favorite water bottle unwanted scratches. Also, the product is easy and quick to install because all tools needed for installation are provided.

Not all holders keep your bottles securely locked in place when riding on bumpy roads and trails. Jen Kates, CPT, owner of Shift Human Performance, a health and performance coach for mountain bikers and other cyclists, says urban commuters, gravel bikers and mountain bikers need to make sure their water bottle isn’t going to fly off their bikes.

Kates recommends the Fidlock system as one of the best water bottle cage for mountain bikes, because it uses a magnetic snap case to lock your water bottle into place and prevent it from getting knocked off your bike.

To use this system, you’ll need to purchase both the TWIST bottle and the magnetic base which attaches to your bike frame. Don’t worry: You can get them together for a perfect fit.

Are Carbon Bottle Cages Better Than Metal Ones

A carbon cage will be lighter than an aluminium, steel or titanium one, but won’t shrug off an impact quite so easily, so bear that in mind depending on the riding you do.

Metal bottle cages can also be bent inwards or outwards to adjust the grip, something which you cant do with carbon, so if you want to make sure your bottles aren’t going anywhere then metal might be your best choice.

Choosing Bottle Cages For Bike Touring

It may seem excessive to put a lot of thought and writing into a piece of gear as mundane as the bottle cage, but bottle cages used on long off-road tours and rugged bikepacking trips take a lot of wear and tear. In addition to being constantly abused by the duty of securing heavy bottles on rough surfaces, they often get knocked around while in transport, and theyre prone to bending and breaking. With that said, weve found it rather important to have good, reliable cages. After all, as heavy as it is, its ideal to put water on the bike, not on your back. Nobody wants to carry a three-liter hydration backpack while out riding long, consecutive days. So, here are the three criteria we used to choose the bottle cages in this reference list:

The Two Fish Original Quick Cage gives you the choice of where you want to mount your water bottle cage.

This water bottle cage mount requires no screws or bolts, unlike many others, meaning you can place it wherever there is space on your bike! Its lightweight at only 25g and strong thanks to the stainless steel construction. Ideal for cyclocross racers who when theyre racing need to remove bottle cages, but want to run them during training.

It mounts using a secure hook-and-loop strap that can be tightened around any point on the bike frame where there is space.

Dont worry, we havent forgotten about the triathletes in our midst.

This Amazon bike water bottle holder is ideal for those riding TT or triathlon bikes as it hides behind the rider, and thus doesnt impact your aerodynamic drag as much as a frame-mounted bottle. In addition to triathlon, its a great place to store another bottle when youre on long training rides.

This new version is, according to XLAB, an improvement on grip force on the bottle by over 60% on the original versions, making it great value for money and easy to access while on the bike.

Where Should I Put My Bottle Cage On My Bike

In most cases, bikers often prefer bottle cages for bike handlebars. Its easy to see why, considering the placement allows for easy drinking. This area makes perfect sense for anyone who intends to do extended racing or riding.

But if you are uncomfortable with a handlebar cage, the frame represents a solid alternative. It keeps the bottle tucked away to ensure its less distracting. Honestly, I find it to be a beneficial placement when I dont need constant water bottle access.

Some frame-mounted products are also quite convenient. For instance, Ninjas TC Mountain cage comes with multi tool storage, allowing users to pack less gear in their bags.

My last recommended placement would be behind the bicycle saddle/seat. In fact, a seat mount water bottle holder is perfect for someone who doesnt want the bottle in their way. Itll tuck it away and keep it available for use when youre having a break or are off the bike.

Iron Jias Carbon Fiber Water Bottle Cage

Bikers arent going to find options more well-equipped than IRON JIAS Carbon Fiber Water Bottle Cage. Its easily one of the top-rated water bottle cages concerning overall performance quality.

For instance, this option has a full carbon fiber construction that provides premium longevity. It offers this benefit without adding much weight to my bike. Its one of the most lightweight bottle holders for bike riders available.

But its construction wasnt the only thing to catch my attention with this option. I appreciate how many different bottles it could hold. After all, itll work with most bottles with a diameter between 72 and 74 mm.

More importantly, it prevents any riding discomfort with its excellent design quality. It features only smooth edges so riders wont cut themselves on it accidentally. Sadly, this issue often pops with lower quality options made with cheap plastic.

Other notable features include five elegant color choices and straightforward installation with setting screws. These aspects further confirm this carbon fiber cage to be a top-flight option.

  • Straightforward installation with included setting screws

King Cage Titanium Water Bottle Cage Review from Roadbikerider.com

As with all bike purchases, it will ultimately come down to a meeting of form, function, and finances. On the whole though, unless you’re after some hyperlight carbon option or a titanium forever-cage, the financial barrier to experimentation is relatively low, so chances are if something catches your eye then you may as well give it a try, provided it does the job of holding your bottle in place.

Beyond this, you need to consider weight and style, as well as things like adjustability if you plan on lugging a giant bottle around with you.

Are Bike Water Bottle Holders Universal

Almost all water bottle holders are universal, with one single caveat.

The bike must have built-in mounting eyelets, which we call bottle cage bosses. If your bike does have them, it should fit almost every single water bottle holder for bikes available. So these mounting eyelets are a beneficial feature to have on your ride.

Most manufacturers of cycling bottle cages make finding these universal holders easy, as well. Theyll usually say in the ad description whether the product is compatible with mounting eyelets.

But sadly, not every bike has these mounting eyelets. In these cases, the bicycle usually wont have any water bottle bike mount. So instead, youll often have to attach your water bottle holder using another method.

How Far Apart Are Bottle Cage Bolts

Aliexpress.com : Buy bisiklet aksesuar Bicycle Carbon Water Bottle Cage ...

Generally, a bottle cage will have about 2 ½ inches between its two mounting holes. So itll be the exact distance between the two bolts when theyre screwed in place. Therefore, Id make sure your chosen water bottle for road bikes isnt wider than this distance.

Otherwise, the bottle might not fit into your installed seatpost water bottle holder, a side load water bottle cage, or another chosen model. Its another reason why bikers must do research into each option before making a final decision.

Electrical Tape Bottle Cages

First seen in our list of Bikepacking Hacks, electrical tape is probably the safest and most trustworthy method of attaching standard bottle cages to a fork, downtube, suspension fork, or just about anywhere, even on oversized tubes. For a secure mount, use about 2/3 of a roll of electrical tape. The Lezyne Power Cages work great for this. To protect your frame, first apply a little tape where the cage will make contact. The cage shown above lasted close to 1,000 miles while bikepacking and trail riding all over the rugged southwest, and it was removed before showing any signs of wear. The great thing about electrical tape is that is comes off easily without residue.

Marque Dual Bike Bottle Cage

Reaching through my water bottle is never a hassle, with this bottle cage featuring dual side load access.

I do not have to worry about switching my hands when using this bottle because my drinks are accessible on both sides. Aside from the convenient structure, it also comes in a black matte minimalist design that gives off a sleek look. The sleek piece goes along well with my black mountain bike.

It can accommodate 750 ml or 75 mm-sized bike water bottles and other beverages that keep me hydrated. The installation is also easy. All we have to do is to mount the bike cage onto our mountain or road bike frames using two stainless steel bolts.

For those who are particular about material, this product is made of flexible thermoplastic, an excellent glass fiber composite material that is very lightweight. Bikers even recognize this material as an excellent alternative to expensive carbon water bottle cages.

  • Angled to ensure good bottle retention, even on rocky terrains

Ec90 Carbon Fiber Bicycle Water Bottle Holder

Zefal Pulse Expandable Water Bottle Bike Cage (Universal Mounting) Review

The first-ever carbon fiber water bottle holder I included in this review will take your ride to a whole new level.

Carbon Fiber 3k material which is heat-treated, makes this product extremely lightweight and robust. This feature makes the product take the lead due to its super toughness that no matter how strong a particular impact is, it would not damage or deform the cage. I am thankful because it makes my travel safe and convenient.

As a racer, I love to go on top speeds during my trip. So, I was constantly looking for a bottle holder that could firmly put my water bottle in place no matter how fast I go and how bumpy the road goes. This function is made possible with the built-in screw design that bolts them in place without affecting shifting.

The item fits most bike types, allowing my brother to use it on his electric bike whenever he takes a leisure stroll around the city park. Besides that, the product has a classy structure that perfectly blends in my bike.

Heads-up:What We Liked:

  • Carbon fiber water bottle that is lightweight and strong
  • Can withstand significant impacts without any signs of deformations
  • Keeps travel safe and convenient.

  • Easy assembly that wont take more than a minute

Lezyne Matrix Team Cage

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don’t intentionally try to break anything but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product’s function and value with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

What the road.cc scores mean

Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

The Lezyne Matrix Team Cage is everything a bottle cage should be: lightweight, secure and good looking. It’s also available in six colours to match your bike, but it is quite expensive for a cage that isn’t carbon.

Lezyne has opted to use a ‘composite matrix’ material which results in a stiffer cage than pure plastic ones that I’ve used. At 37g on our scales, this has clearly kept the weight down as well, although there are lighter options out there the Merida Aero C cage, for example, is just 20g.

Hose Clamp Bottle Cage

Hose clamps are the most common method used to attach bottle cages onto suspension forks or a boss-less metal bike frame. We dont recommend this method for a carbon fork, although weve seen it done with padding and a light touch. Hose clamps are measured in diameter, so youll need to calculate the tubing size plus the cage youre clamping I typically use a 3.0 clamp on a fox 34 or RockShox fork sandwiching a layer of recycled inner tube or electrical tape to protect the tubing. Tighten it enough to hold the cage in place . Note that some cages work particularly well for this. Widefoots oversized cage has strap slots and Salsas Nickless Cage has slots through which the straps can be threaded. Others have tabs. With some cages, you might need longer pipe clamps to strap around the tubular rails.

Most bike frames contain built-in bolts known as bottle cage mounts that make it easy to install your water bottle holder. However, if your bike doesn’t have these, Spann recommends an SKS-Germany adapter. It’ll allow you to securely attach a holder anywhere on your bike.
