After riding a number of models â from folding to mountain to cargo bikes â we think the Rad Power RadCity 5 Plus is the best electric bike for most people. Starting at $1,799, it’s not overly expensive for an ebike, and comes in both a low-step and a high-step models. We also like that it has front and rear fenders as well as a built-in bike rack. Its battery is removable, making it easier to charge. In fact, we liked it so much that it won the Tom’s Guide Award for best electric bike in 2022.
If you live in more urban environments, you may want to check out the Charge Bikes City, which shares many of the same characteristics as the RadCity 5 Plus, but its handlebars and pedals can fold flat, making the bike easier to store if you have limited space.
If you’re shopping for an electric bike now, here are the best we’ve tested so far. Keep in mind that due to high demand, many of the best electric bikes are either on backorder or are sold out. And while many are still quite expensive, they’re coming down in price in fact, we also have a list of the best budget electric bikes.

What Can Be Improved
While those accessories I mentioned previously are cool, something I do not think is very cool is that a headlight for the Rebel has to also be purchased separately. That just doesnt make sense to me because this is marketed as a hunting bike, and it would get most of its use in the dark. I am not sure why they require you to spend another $100 for a light after you have already spent more than $5,000 on the bike itself.
The other thing I didnt like was the kickstand placement. It needs to be moved back a bit, in my opinion. Otherwise, it is tough to move the bike around if the stand is down. You also have to lift the kickstand back up to move the petals.
Do I Need A License To Ride One
Electric bikes are still a fairly new concept in the US, so there is a lot of confusion about how the law views them. Federal law considers electric bicycles in the class as regular bicycles, provided they meet two conditions: the top speed in electric only mode is 20 miles per hour and the motor power must be no more than 750W.
EVELO electric bicycles meet both of the federal requirements. We cap the top speed in electric only mode at 20 miles per hour, although you can of course go faster on your bike with pedal power if you wish. Our motors are rated at 250W, which is well within federal limits.
Consequently, electric bikes do not need a special registration, license, or insurance to operate. Moreover, they enjoy the same privileges as regular bicycles, such as being allowed to travel in available bike lanes.
However, different states have their own special requirements regarding electric bike use. While most follow the federal lead, some do vary. If you have questions about how electric bikes work in your state, you can get in touch with us and well point you in the direction to find out additional information for your state. For your own personal safety, we recommend helmet use and lights and reflecting gear, even if the law does not specifically require them.

Where Can I Ride An E
Thanks to sensible and considered rules around maximum power output, an e-bike can be ridden anywhere a traditional bicycle would. Be it on the road, on shared bike paths or at your local trail centre, e-bikes and regular bikes are more than capable of occupying the same bike lanes, singletrack or pathways.
When it comes to road rules, e-bikes also follow the same standards as a regular bicycle and so while a license isnt required, riders must comply with the road rules set out for cyclists. Australia closely mirrors Europes e-bike laws, and as such, bikes are required to have a motor output of no more than 200w for throttle-driven bikes and 250w when used on a certified pedelec bike.
Any e-bike exceeding these regulations is categorised as a motor vehicle and standard road rules apply. For more information, check out our article on cycling specific road rules to know.
For Fighting Climate Change

Transportation isnarrowlythe biggest single source of carbon emissions in the U.S. And cutting miles by switching to a bike is also the most effective way to cut your carbon output from transportation. Thats because any vehicle has a total carbon footprint broken down into two parts: creating it and operating it . The figure that captures both of those is called a Life Cycle Assessment.
Life Cycle Assessment is usually expressed in terms of grams of carbon dioxide produced per mile driven, which spreads the carbon produced in making the product over its estimated lifespan. According to Teslas 2020 Impact Report, a grid-charged Model 3 in the U.S. has an LCA of 180g/mile, assuming it lasts about 200,000 miles with only minor repairs . Its worth noting that figure is for a sedan an E-SUV or truck would have a higher per-mile cost. That figure jumps around depending on how its charged. In Europe, says Tesla, the Model 3s LCA drops to around 120g/mile thanks to electricity production that relies more on renewables and nuclear than our domestic power supply, while in Chinas coal-and-gas-heavy grid its over 300g/mile.

The official name for e-bikes in the UK are Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles, and they can even legally be considered small motor vehicles putting them in the same league as mopeds or motorcycles depending on the power of the motor. To be classified as a regular bicycle, it needs to comply with the following rules :
- A motor that wont assist beyond 25 km/h.
- The maximum continuous rated power for 30 minutes is restricted to 250 watts.
E-bikes that exceed these values are no longer legally considered bicycles. As mopeds, they require a driving licence and insurance
E-bikes
Despite common assumption, most people are not actually riding the official definition of an e-bike. Legally seen, EU law classifies certain electric bikes as small motor vehicles or powered cycles. The reason? You get ‘twist and go’ e-bikes self-propelled bikes with a throttle that do not need to have their pedals in motion for the motor to be engaged. They can reach up to full speed using a twist and go throttle on the bars.
But legal jargon aside, the term e-bike is mainly used these days as a general term for bikes with a motor, and for pedelecs, which is how well also use it.
Pedelecs
S-pedelecs
- The motor assists up to speeds of 45 km/h.
- The maximum continuous power is up to 4,000 watts.
- Given the higher speeds, s-pedelecs have a more robust frame and more powerful brakes.

What Is An Ebike Heres Everything You Need To Know
For decades, owning a car in any US city was a given. This is quite different from the old continent, where many countries depend heavily on bikes for transportation. This trend has been slowly changing in the past decade, thanks to the introduction of electric bikes.
City dwellers probably top the list of the ebike community. Typically, a 26-min commute is far easier with an ebike than with any other method of transport. Its also a lot more pleasant and relaxing.
Electric bikes also enticed a huge demographic into embracing this healthy lifestyle. Middle-aged athletes, elderly people, or just the folks who arent big fans of strenuous exercise. The assisted mode of driving certainly had its allure.
ebikes are becoming more powerful and more affordable, and thats always a huge plus. There are many more reasons why theyre selling like hotcakes. Well talk about all that in detail below, starting with the very basic question: whats an ebike?
How Do I Operate The Bike
Electric bicycles are designed to be very easy to operate. As a rider, you have three modes of operation available to you:
Pedal Only
At any time, you can pedal an electric bicycle just as you would with a regular one. There is no extra resistance created by the motor, so it will feel exactly as a regular bicycle would. Depending on the model you purchase, your bicycle will come either with a 3 gears or 8 gears or a special NuVinci® N360 internal drivetrain that provides you with unlimited gears.
Pedal-Assist
In this mode, you can take advantage of combined human plus electric power. Once you turn on this mode via the on/off button on the handlebars, the motor will gently provide electric power as you pedal. You can still switch gears as the terrain changes to take advantage of more torque or faster speed. Its an amazing feeling to use pedal-assist mode, as it makes cycling effortless, flattens out the hills, and frees you to just enjoy yourself and the scenery.
Pedal-assist mode provides three levels of assistance: Low , Medium and High . The percentage simply indicates how much additional power the motor will provide to complement your pedaling. The low setting adds an additional 30% of power to your pedaling, while High essentially doubles it. A simple press of a button switches you through the different levels.

Intro To Electric Bikes
Riding an electric bikeor e-bikefor the first time can feel like discovering a superpower. Thats because pedal-assist e-bikes extend your two-wheel possibilities: You can keep up in stop-and-start traffic, more easily haul kids or cargo, arrive less sweaty at your destination, or simply enjoy a little extra oomph on rides that otherwise might have seemed too far or too hilly.
E-bikes initially break down into the same categories as conventional bikes: mountain and road, plus niches like urban, hybrid, cruiser, cargo and folding bikes. For an overview of basic bike categories, read How to Choose a Bike.
State Bicycle Co 6061 Ebike Commuter
Power: 350W | Weight: 39 lb. | Top speed: 20 mph
- Only available in black
- Lights not included
Around the Bicycling offices, we like State for its practical, no-nonsense approach to designing bikes. As a result, the brand’s bikes consistently perform well in our ride testing. The only problem, until now State hasn’t had an e-bike. For its first entry into the heavily contested commuter e-bike category, State introduced a bike that is decisively practical and no-nonsenseright down to the name and color.
From across the street, the plainly named 6061 eBike Commuter doesn’t look all that different from other State 6061 models. But get up close and you’ll find an LG 36V10Ah cell Lithium battery neatly hidden in the frame’s downtube powering the 250W rear hub motor. To keep maintenance easy, State equipped the eBike Commuter with a singlespeed drivetrain . The bike rolls on 700c wheels with thick, 45mm wide Kenda e-bike tires and stops with cable disc brakes front and rear. The 6061 eBike Commuter isn’t big on features or color optionswith three sizes offered and matte black being the only colorbut if you’re after a good deal on a sleeky bike, this is a great new choice.

A Fair Assessment Of The Pros & Cons
Having said all that, Ill admit with all openness, that the perks of commuting with an ebike far exceed any shortcomings. The price of an ebike compared to a vehicle or motorcycle is also a deciding factor here.
And if you need to travel to a particularly distant location, you can rent a car as needed. In addition to the multitude of options available in public transport.
Are Electric Bikes Legal

The biggest difference between an electric bike and a motorbike is that the e-bike can only assist its rider, its motor cannot be the sole source of power for the bike. To clarify, in order for an electric bike to be legal, in many countries it can only assist a rider up to 25km/h . This applies to most of Europe and Australia if you live in the US, keep reading.
Outside the US the motor inside the bike can only be a maximum of 250w and cannot be operated by a throttle like you’d find on a motorbike. Which, sadly, does mean you’ll have to use your legs!
The rules in the US are a bit more difficult to follow as the laws can vary state to state, and federal law surrounding e-bikes may say something different again.
The Bicycle Product Suppliers Association has sought to clear up some of the confusion, slotting e-bikes into a three-class system, all of which are limited to 750-watt motors.
The laws surrounding where and who can ride which class of e-bikes also varies state to state, but the TL:DR version is class 1 and 2 are permitted anywhere bikes are allowed, and class 3 are okay on roads and in bike lanes, but not multi-use paths, and have rules surrounding helmet use and minimum rider age. Thankfully the lovely folks over at People for Bikes have a handy guide that breaks the rules up by state.

Best Electric Folding Bikes
Oliver Woodman / Immediate Media
If you want to commute or are just pressed for space to store your ride, a compact electric folding bike could be the answer. The motor means that longer bike commutes are easier and more comfortable than with a non-assisted folding bike.
Folding ebikes often have the battery hidden in their frames, or they may come with a removable battery to make carrying them on and off public transport a bit easier. A removable battery also means that you can take it somewhere where its easier to charge .
But the extra weight of the motor and battery mean that carrying a folding ebike on and off public transport and up and down stairs will be harder, and the available range can be quite limited in some models.
Pros: Ideal for a longer commute, can be taken on public transport
Cons: Can be heavy to carry on and off public transport and may have limited range

The Types Of Ebikes By Capability
Since the conception of ebikes they were categorized into:
- Pedal-assist: the motor provides partial assistance only, to make the drive a bit easier.
- Throttle assist: the motor can take over completely. A real pleasure to cruise with this one!
There are significant differences in price between the two since the second often requires a more powerful motor and a battery of a much higher capacity.

What Is An Ebike
An Electric bike, or ebike for short, is a regular bike with a battery-operated motor. The motor provides extra power, thus the rider wouldnt have to pedal full-load.
There are various levels of electric assistance that ebikes can have. Starting from a little push that makes a hill a little easier to scale, all the way to the throttle assist power boost, which makes a steep slope feel like a walk in the park.
Ebikes are capable of achieving pedaling speeds that arent usual for regular bikes. Moreover, with the pedal-assist a biker would be able to travel much farther. Thus, the experience of pedaling takes a whole other dimension.
There are various models of ebikes that cater to various popular uses. The urban and mountain ebikes are probably the most familiar. But there are also cruisers, cargo, folding, commuter, and snow bikes.
